Today, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo met with Mr Mathias Cormann, the new OECD Secretary-General. They discussed, among other things, the economic recovery after COVID-19.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo informed his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau that Belgium has decided to join the Ocean Plastics Charter. The two Prime Ministers met yesterday for a bilateral discussion. The link between climate and ocean conservation was also discussed.

In the run-up to next week's NATO Summit, Prime Minister De Croo will welcome US President Biden at Melsbroek Military Airport on Sunday evening. On Monday, the Prime Minister will open the NATO Summit together with the NATO Secretary-General. On Tuesday, he and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau will pay a joint working visit to vaccine manufacturer Pfizer in Puurs.

Today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, announced an agreement outlining the new relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom. In his first response, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo welcomes the agreement.

As Prime Minister of Belgium I would like to congratulate Mr. Biden on his victory and I wish him success with his upcoming mandate as President of one of the world’s largest and oldest democracies. The federal government and the minister-presidents of the federated entities today examined the epidemiological situation of COVID-19. The Consultation Committee deems the situation particularly serious and has therefore decided to bolster the hygiene measures. The Consultation Committee has also appointed a COVID-19 commissioner.
