Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands are joining forces to make the North Sea the largest source of renewable energy in Europe, as they agreed today at the North Sea Summit in the Danish port city of Esbjerg.

The Kingdom of Belgium, as a founding member and the host nation of both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, welcomes the application of the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Sweden to become NATO member. The Finnish and Swedish decisions are the result of a democratic process and are in line with both nation’s sovereign right to choose their own security arrangements.

On 19 April, the Belgian and Dutch governments held a joint "Thalassa Summit" in Ghent. We took stock of our intense collaboration and discussed how we will further strengthen our close relationship in the coming years.

Today, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Støre signed a far-reaching energy cooperation agreement, enabling them to go full steam ahead for renewable energy. Belgium and Norway will cooperate in areas such as offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage. The Prime Ministers also discussed the situation in Ukraine and stressed the importance of Western unity.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo will participate in the Munich Security Conference, the annual security conference in Munich, from 18 to 20 February. Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès will accompany him. In light of the Ukrainian crisis, the Prime Minister will speak on the importance of strengthening Europe’s security architecture. The programme also includes a series of bilateral meetings.

To mark the end of the Benelux presidency of Belgium, the Prime Ministers of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands reaffirm in a joint declaration their commitment to continue strengthening their cooperation.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is participating today in the Democracy Summit hosted by the White House at the invitation of US President Joe Biden. Both nationally and internationally, Belgium continues to defend democracy and the rule of law.

Prime Minister De Croo and Prime Minister Johnson signed a joint declaration today expressing their intention to open a new chapter of deeper bilateral cooperation and partnership between Belgium and the United Kingdom.
