Henry van de Velde would have been 150 on 3 April
Within the context of the exhibition Henry van de Velde – Passion Function Beauty, due to open in Brussels on 13 September this year and devoted to this multi-talented architect’s work, the Cinquantenaire Museum is proud to announce that it will be able to display the bureau made in 1934-1935 for King Leopold III.
Accompanying it will be its accessories and its chair. Additional bonuses on view will be the chart table and carpet from the same interior, as well as the 1862 painting by Henri Leys, La fondation de la Toison d’Or, for which van de Velde designed a new frame. All in all, an ensemble that will be receiving its first ever public showing.
The large-scale retrospective organized by the Cinquantenaire Museum will be offering a chronological overview of the highly diverse artistic oeuvre of this artist. Besides Leopold III’s bureau, moreover, a certain number of works will be supplementing those on display at the Neues Museum Weimar, where the exhibition is currently running, including textiles and book bindings, as well as fifteen exceptional, cased-glass vases produced at the Val-Saint-Lambert factory. These vases were created by Léon Ledru with the help of van de Velde, whose typical Art Nouveau line they all bear.
The exhibition is being held within the scope of the 150th anniversary of this celebrated Belgian artist’s birth on 3 April 1863. Also marking the occasion will be a series of other exhibitions and events, details of which can be found on the Cinquantenaire Museum’s website: www.mrah.be
